Portsmouth Museums

Courthouse Galleries
Portsmouth Museums are all within walking distance of each other. Take a stroll and find something of interest for all family members.

Children’s Museum of Virginia LogoChildren’s Museum of Virginia —(Website)—221 High Street—757-393-8393—
The Children’s Museum of Virginia is temporarily closed for remodeling/renovation, but don’t worry…the fun will continue at Andalo’s Clubhouse, less than two blocks away at 420 High St., which will open Oct. 17.
Once Andalo’s Clubhouse opens on Oct. 17, it will still offer the same fun the Children’s Museum has provided for years, such as birthday parties and Family Fun Days celebrating events like Chinese New Year and Black History Month. Educational programs will also continue at Andalo’s Clubhouse – plus through a new outreach program designed to bring a bit of the magic of the Children’s Museum directly to the classroom.
Andalo’s Clubhouse will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays (closed Mondays, except on holidays that fall on a Monday). Initially, admission will be $3. After the Courthouse Galleries Museum at the corner of High and Court streets opens its “Winter Wonderland” exhibit for the holidays, a combination ticket to both museums will cost $5 per person.
The Children’s Museum of Virginia will remain closed until early 2011 for an expansion that will add nearly 12,000 square feet and dozens of new exhibits. For more information, call 757-393-5258 or visit www.childrensmuseumva.com.

Golf in Portsmouth

The Links Golf Training Center
is located at City Park and features a lighted driving range, 9-hole golf course, and an 18-hole natural grass putting course. Designed as a golf learning center, The Links offers a variety of teaching programs to include junior clinics, ladies clinics, and individual instruction programs. Instruction covers the full swing, pitching, chipping, putting, etiquette and rules.

Each year The Links hosts three junior tournaments as well as the Portsmouth City Senior Championship. In recent years, The Links has combined with the USGA Juniors Program and the Beazley Foundation to encourage golf development in urban areas. For more information on these programs and private lessons at The Links, contact Bob Sutter, Jr., PGA Professional and his staff at 757-465-1500.

Once golf becomes a habit, or at least a regular itch…try the Bide-A-Wee course. Reopened in April 1999, the $8 million Curtis Strange and Tom Clark renovation has earned this jewel of a course Golf Digest's distinction of “most improved course in the nation”. Includes 18-hole championship course, driving range, grille and full service Pro Shop. Andy Giles is the PGA professional and can be reached at 757-393-8600.
